December in Lake Harmony: what the season looks like

December in Lake Harmony means early-season skiing at Big Boulder (3 min from our door) and Jack Frost (5 min), holiday festivities in Jim Thorpe (20 min), and resort celebrations at Kalahari (25 min) — with NYC ~2 hr and Philadelphia ~1.5 hr away, it's the closest real winter to both cities. Big Boulder runs 100% snowmaking and pushes to be the first Pennsylvania resort to open each winter, so the season here often starts before Thanksgiving. Jim Thorpe Olde Time Christmas

Jim Thorpe's Olde Time Christmas is the signature holiday event of our corner of the Poconos — a free, town-wide Victorian celebration just 20 min from the chalet. It traditionally runs the first three weekends of December; in 2025 that meant a tree lighting in Josiah White Park on Friday, December 5 (Santa flipped the switch at 6 pm) followed by festival weekends December 6–7, 13–14, and 20–21. If 2026 follows the same first-three-weekends rhythm, expect the tree lighting on Friday, December 4 and festival weekends December 5–6, 12–13 and 19–20, 2026 — the official schedule lands in the fall, so confirm before booking anything ticketed.

• Free to wander: strolling carolers, decorated storefronts, twinkling lights along Broadway, and 50+ boutiques and galleries.
• Ticketed extras: scenic train rides on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway (select weekends through December), horse-drawn carriage rides, and candlelight tours of the Asa Packer Mansion.

Holiday events at the resorts

The big Pocono resorts stack their calendars in December, and the two that matter most from Lake Harmony are Kalahari (25 min) and Camelback (about 35 minutes). Kalahari's Holiday Happenings include Breakfast with Santa, a Christmas Buffet on Friday, December 25, 2026, and a New Year's Eve Grand Buffet on December 31, 2026 — details were still rolling out as of late summer, so check the site before reserving. Camelback's winter happenings have included Santa's arrival with an Ullr snow celebration, live music at The Thirsty Camel, and 40+ lanes of snow tubing; in 2025 that meant Ullr Fest fireworks on November 8, Santa’s arrival and tree lighting on December 5, and Mrs. Claus cookie decorating through the month — expect the same beats in 2026–27, posted in the fall. Lights & markets worth the drive

The best Christmas market in the region is Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem, and its 2026 dates are already confirmed: November 13–15, 20–22, 27–29, then December 3–6, 10–13, and 17–20 at the SteelStacks campus, about 40 minutes south of Lake Harmony. Now in its 34th year, it's one of the largest and most-attended Christmas markets in the country, with dozens of artisan vendors, festive food, and family activities in "Christmas City, USA."

• Poconos Lights at Poconos Park — a mile-plus drive-thru light experience near Bushkill. In 2025 it ran November 28–December 31 — Thursday–Sunday until Christmas Eve, then nightly through New Year’s Eve, gates 5–9 pm — so pencil in a near-identical 2026 run; dates are confirmed in the fall.
• Country Junction, Lehighton — "the world's largest general store," 20 minutes away, does Santa photos on weekends from late November through just before Christmas (2025: Nov 28–Dec 21; 2026 dates usually appear in November).
• Downtown Lehighton — has hosted a festival of some 170 decorated trees with horse-drawn carriage rides on a mid-December Saturday.

New Year's Eve near Lake Harmony

You have four solid ways to ring in 2027 within 25 minutes of the chalet: a resort party, a concert, a night ski, or a hot tub under the stars. Kalahari's New Year's Eve Grand Buffet is listed for Thursday, December 31, 2026, and Camelback traditionally runs both a midnight countdown and a family-friendly "Noon Year's" celebration so little kids can celebrate before bedtime.

• Live music in Jim Thorpe: Penn's Peak, the 1,800-capacity mountaintop venue, and the Mauch Chunk Opera House both host NYE shows most years — lineups are usually announced in the fall, and the Pocono Mountains NYE roundup collects them all.
• Ski into the new year: Big Boulder's night skiing (3 min away) is our favorite low-effort NYE — last runs, then home for the countdown.
• Stay in: honestly, with a house that sleeps 14, a game room tournament plus a midnight hot tub soak is hard to beat.
