How Far Is Jim Thorpe from Lake Harmony?

Jim Thorpe is a 20-minute drive from our chalet — south on PA-903 the whole way, dropping off the Pocono plateau into the Lehigh River gorge. It's the closest walkable downtown to Lake Harmony, and once you park, everything in this itinerary except the bike shuttle is reachable on foot.

That short drive is why we tell guests not to overthink it: leave after breakfast, spend the whole day, and you're back at the chalet for a nightcap in the speakeasy billiard room without anyone falling asleep in the car. Compare that with roughly 2 hours back to NYC or 1.5 hours to Philadelphia — this is the payoff of basing yourselves in Lake Harmony.

Morning-to-Evening Itinerary

The winning formula: train in the late morning, Broadway in the middle of the day, history in the afternoon, dinner before the 20-minute drive home. Here's how we'd run it.

Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

Trains depart from the 1888-era station area at 1 Susquehanna Street and run a narrated 16-mile round trip along the Lehigh River through Lehigh Gorge State Park — about 70 minutes most of the year, shortened to 45-minute departures during the busy Autumn Leaf season. Arrive well before departure and check the current schedule at lgsry.com; the open-air car is the one to fight for.

Asa Packer Mansion and the Old Jail

The Asa Packer Mansion — the preserved 1861 home of the railroad magnate who founded Lehigh University — runs docent-guided tours of roughly 45 minutes, generally Wednesday through Monday in summer and fall (weekends in spring), with the last tour at 3:00 p.m. The Old Jail Museum on West Broadway, open May through October, is where Molly Maguires were hanged in the 1870s; the sealed Cell 17 still shows the handprint a condemned miner left as proof of his innocence.

Swap the afternoon museums for the D&L Trail: Pocono Biking rents bikes and shuttles riders daily May through November, including the 26-mile, gently downhill run from White Haven back into Jim Thorpe. Bonus for our guests — the White Haven trailhead is only about 15 minutes from the chalet, so you can also ride it straight from a Lake Harmony morning.

Parking in Jim Thorpe: Where the Lots Fill First

Park at the main Carbon County lot at 1 Susquehanna Street, right by the train station — but know that its roughly 375 spaces often hit capacity by 10 a.m. on weekends. Arriving by 9:30 is the single best move you can make on this day trip.

• First choice: the county lot at 1 Susquehanna St — flat daily rate, higher on weekends and holidays; check current pricing on the borough's parking page.
• Backup: the smaller public lot near Josiah White Park at 41 Susquehanna St, just south of the station.
• Festival weekends: the borough runs satellite lots with shuttles along Route 209 — use them rather than circling downtown's narrow streets.
• Late arrival? Spots reopen late afternoon as day-trippers leave; from the chalet it's only a 20-minute drive, so an evening-only dinner run is painless.

Fall Foliage Festival: 2026 Timing

The Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival runs the first three full weekends of October — October 3–4, 10–11, and 17–18 in 2026 — with craft vendors, food stands, and free live music downtown from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the festival itself is free.

Peak color in the gorge typically lands around mid-October, which makes the middle weekend both the prettiest and the most crowded. Our advice from 20 minutes up the hill: go on a festival Sunday, arrive before 9 a.m., and book Autumn Leaf train tickets in advance — October rides sell out. If you'd rather see foliage without the crowds, the boulder-strewn trails at Hickory Run State Park (also 20 minutes from the chalet) turn the same colors with a fraction of the traffic.

Dog-Friendly Jim Thorpe Stops

Jim Thorpe is one of the best dog day trips in the Poconos — and since our chalet is pet-friendly with a fully fenced quarter-acre backyard, your dog can do the whole day with you. Best of all: leashed, well-behaved dogs ride the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway free, welcome in both the standard coaches and the open-air car, and they even get their own ticket.

• The scenic railway — the region's signature dog-friendly attraction; confirm current pet policy when you book.
• The D&L Trail — leashed dogs are welcome on the rail-trail along the river.
• Josiah White Park — the grassy square by the station, ideal between stops.
• Downtown patios — several Broadway restaurants seat dogs outside in warm months; ask before you sit.
